Instagram arriving on Android “very soon”

Instagram, the hugely popular photo-sharing and filtering app, currently only available on iOS, is arriving on Android “very soon”, having passed 27 million registered users in recent days.

The Android announcement was made yesterday by Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom at SXSW in Austin, Texas. Systrom didn’t give a demo of the app but commented,

“In some ways, it’s better than our iOS app. It’s crazy.”

The app is said to work well on large varying Android screen sizes and contains the usual social sharing to Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and others.

Instragam’s iOS app first launched on the App Store in October 2010, with Android users vying for their platform version ever since. It seems like it’s taken Instragram an age to address its potential Android audience but Systrom doesn’t see it this way.

“I don’t think it took us so long. We just had priorities. Had we tried to be both on Android and iPhone at the same time, it would’ve been tough to innovate in the way that we have.”

If Instagram has gotten the experience right across the Android platform then the wait will have been worthwhile.
